Understanding the Different Types of UAE Trade Licenses

UAE businesses are generally licensed under commercial, professional, or industrial categories, each governing different types of permitted activity.

When registering a company in the UAE, whether on the mainland or within a free zone, the business is generally issued a trade license that falls into one of a few broad categories, each governing the type of activity the company is permitted to carry out. Understanding these categories helps founders ensure their license actually covers the activities they intend to pursue.

A commercial license generally covers businesses engaged in trading activities, such as buying and selling goods, whether through retail, wholesale, or general trading operations. This is one of the most common license types and covers a wide range of trade-related business models.

A professional license, by contrast, is generally intended for service-based businesses and individual professionals, such as consultants, advisors, and various skilled service providers, where the value being delivered is expertise or a service rather than physical goods.

An industrial license generally applies to businesses involved in manufacturing, processing, or industrial production activities, and often comes with additional regulatory requirements related to the physical facility, safety standards, and environmental compliance given the nature of industrial operations.

Some businesses require a combination of activities that may not fit neatly into a single license category, and free zones and mainland authorities generally have specific rules about how many activities, and from which categories, can be combined under one license. Founders are encouraged to confirm their intended activities align precisely with their license category before beginning operations, since operating outside a license's scope can create compliance issues.
