The licence itself is the fast part
Issuing the trade licence is not the bottleneck. Most UAE free zones are built for speed and turn a complete, clean application around in a few working days. If someone quotes you weeks for the licence alone, ask why.
Name approval and activity selection
Two early steps decide whether your first days are smooth or stalled. Your trade name has to be available and compliant with UAE naming rules, and your business activities have to match what the authority can license. Choosing an activity the zone can't license has the same delaying effect, so it's worth confirming before you file.
Documents are the usual hold-up

Those add time on top of the licence, and they scale with the number of visas you're processing. A licence-only setup is quick; a setup with several visas takes longer, and that's normal.

For a straightforward free-zone company with no visa, think days, not weeks. Add one or more residence visas and you're looking at a few weeks end-to-end, most of which is the immigration process rather than the licence. Mainland setups can involve extra steps like tenancy registration, which extends the timeline further.
How to make it as fast as possible
Decide your zone, activity and visa count before you start. Have your passport, photo and visa or entry documents ready in clean scans. Give three good name choices. Do those, and you remove almost every avoidable delay — leaving only the authority's own processing time, which is genuinely quick.
