What Documents Do You Need to Set Up a UAE Company?

Fewer than you'd expect. A passport, a photo, proof of your visa status and three name choices are the core of it. Here's the full checklist, and how to avoid delays.

One reason UAE company setup is faster than people expect is that the paperwork is light. There's no mountain of notarised forms for a straightforward free-zone company, just a short, specific set of documents. Here's exactly what you need, and the small details that make the difference between a same-week approval and a bounced application.

The core documents

For most free-zone setups, you'll need:

**A passport copy.** A full, clear scan, all four corners and both side edges visible. This is the single most common cause of delay: a passport scan that's cropped or blurry gets sent back. A clean scan the first time saves days.

**A passport-size photo.** With a white background and your face clearly visible, the standard format used across UAE applications.

**Proof of your UAE status.** If you hold a UAE visa or entry stamp, residence, tourist, cancelled or an entry stamp, you provide a copy. If you have never entered the UAE, you don't have one, so you supply your home-country national ID instead. Overseas founders applying from abroad are a normal, expected case.

**Your Emirates ID**, if you already have one.

The details you decide

Beyond documents, you'll provide a few decisions:

**Three preferred company names.** The authority checks them in order, if your first choice is taken, they move to the next without coming back to you, which avoids a full round-trip. Giving three good options up front genuinely speeds things up.

**Your business activities.** What your company will actually do, matched to what the zone can license.

**Contact and address details**, your email, phone, and residential address in your home country (and your UAE address if you have one).

What you usually don't need

For a standard free-zone company you generally won't need share-capital deposits, a local sponsor's paperwork, or a stack of notarised corporate documents. Certain activities or a mainland setup can require more, regulated activities sometimes need external approvals, and mainland companies typically involve a tenancy contract, but the base case is genuinely light.

How to avoid the delays

Almost every avoidable delay comes down to two things: unclear document scans and a single company name that gets rejected. Submit clean, complete scans and three name choices, and you remove the two most common reasons an application stalls, leaving only the authority's own processing time, which is fast.

*Document requirements vary by authority and activity. Any licence or visa is subject to approval by the competent UAE authorities.*
