For most expatriates relocating to the UAE for work, the employment visa remains the standard pathway to legal residency, generally sponsored by the employing company on behalf of the employee. This process typically begins once a job offer has been finalized, with the employer initiating the necessary approvals through the relevant labor and immigration authorities before the employee's arrival or status change within the country.

The general process involves several sequential steps, beginning with an entry permit that allows the individual to enter or remain in the UAE while the remaining visa formalities are completed. This is generally followed by a mandatory medical fitness test, which checks for certain communicable diseases, and biometric enrollment for an Emirates ID, the country's official identification card used across a wide range of government and private sector services.

Once these steps are completed, the residence visa is generally stamped into the employee's passport, or issued digitally depending on current procedures, formally establishing their legal residency tied to their employment. This visa is typically valid for a period of one to three years, depending on the employer and jurisdiction, and must be renewed to maintain continuous legal status.

Employees should understand that this visa is generally tied directly to their employer, meaning a job change typically requires the new employer to sponsor a new visa, and there are usually specific timelines within which this transition must occur to avoid a gap in legal residency status.
