For individuals who have recently relocated to the UAE, obtaining a credit card generally requires meeting eligibility criteria that can differ somewhat from what new residents may have experienced in their home country, since UAE banks generally rely heavily on local income verification and, in some cases, an existing relationship with the bank rather than an international credit history.

Banks generally assess credit card applications based on factors such as the applicant's salary level, the stability and nature of their employment, and whether they already hold another account, such as a salary or savings account, with the same bank. Because credit history from outside the UAE is generally not automatically factored into a UAE bank's assessment, some new residents find it easier to qualify for a credit card after having held a UAE bank account and demonstrated stable income for a period of time.

Some banks offer secured credit card options, which generally require the applicant to place a cash deposit as collateral against the card's credit limit, providing an alternative path to obtaining a card for individuals who may not yet meet the income or tenure requirements for a standard, unsecured credit card.

New residents are generally encouraged to research the specific eligibility requirements of a few different banks, since minimum salary thresholds and other criteria can vary meaningfully between institutions, and to consider building a local banking relationship over time if their initial application for a preferred card is not immediately successful.
